England Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate has outlined the merits of the Manchester United quartet included in his squad for the Euro qualifier with Wales on Wednesday.

Sam Johnstone, Michael Keane, Wilfried Zaha and Jesse Lingard are in Southgate's plans for the clash at Derby County's iPro Stadium, with tickets still available for the East Midlands encounter.

Johnstone is one of three goalkeepers included and has earned a recall after obtaining first-team football during a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers.

"Sam has been in our younger teams for quite a number of years now," Southgate told ManUtd.com. "At the beginning of the season, when we got together, he was injured for my first Under-21 camp and so, since then, he hadn’t really been playing first-team football.

Centre-back Keane has returned from a loan stint at Derby, hosts for the midweek fixture, and shown his class again at Under-21 level for Warren Joyce's side. Southgate does not feel his charges necessarily need to be getting first-team football in order to justify their selection.

"No, I’ve not really taken a hard and fast policy on that," he explained. "I’ve got to look at what the players’ potential are and there will be some spells where they are back with the club and not getting first-team football.

"I think most of the players like the fact they’re playing first-team football with something resting on the game every Saturday. "Jesse is somebody who I think has looked more comfortable in the environment every time he has come to us," stated Southgate. "He had a very good spell at Birmingham, I thought, earlier in the season.

They play good football down there and it will suit his game.

You can see that in his frame but when you have got a talented footballer like he is, you give them time."

"Of course it’ll be interesting for him," said the England Under-21 boss. "The thing for Wilf is, despite the number of matches he’s played for Crystal Palace, it’s his first experience of the Premier League really at Cardiff.

"It is a step up. It’d be easy to assume he would go there from United and everything would gel and he’d be hitting goals straight away but I don’t think football works like that.
